  18. Sorry if my last message wandered a bit. I now am in my OLR and
  19. probably still will presnt myself as confusingly as my on line
  20. message represented me to be.  So, bear with!  :)

  22. The CFDN (Crafting File Distribution Network) was born on Nov.
  23. 16, 1993 when a few of "the ladies" in the Fidonet CRAFTING echo
  24. conference wanted to facilitate moving the free craft instruction
  25. sheets we get around the country to one another. I had a "BIT" of
  26. know how, got the necessary programs set up and instructed the
  27. others, as needed. I now know A LOT more than about computing than I
  28. did last fall!!

  30. By December 1st we had 104 nodes polling me for feeding to others
  31. the files in the CFDN. We decided it was time to backbone and filebone
  32. to help reduce our long distance call investments.
  33.  
  34. On January 1st, 1994 the CFDN and it's two off-shoot echo conferences,
  35. CRAFTING-SYSOPS and CRAFTING-FORSALE were BACK and FILEBONED. The
  36. CFDN is also carried via Planet Connect and Page Sat satellite sites,
  37. and gated in to various "other" nets.

  39. To date the CFDN has processed 579 files on every concievable craft.
  40. The echos above have generated approximately 3000 messages. As I was
  41. told by the heirarchy of Fidonet, I "found a niche that needed to be
  42. filled.", making the CFDN the most active file mover on the FILEBONE.
  43. Systems carrying the CFDN file areas remark about noticeable increases
  44. in memberships on their system because of the CRAFTING echos/files.

  46. On July 5, 1994 the Aileen's crafting show, seen here on The Nashville
  47. Network (Noon, EST M-F) will dedicate a portion of their segment to
  48. the CFDN. They have also agreed to supply directly the CFDN copies of
  49. all their craft files, computer ready. The latter to take place before
  50. the fall, as soon as the computer arrangements/set ups are established
  51. and functioning properly.

  53. Also as of the 2cd week of June we have incorporated many of the
  54. crafting manufacturer's and publishers to contribute to the CFDN
  55. directly, such as Oxmoor House, Ribbon Outlet, Davis Enterprises,
  56. M & R, Inc.. and on and on, to name only a few. The lists grows daily.

  58. The CFDN will also be represented by David Larson Productions, producers
  59. of many PBS & Commerical crafting shows at the Crafting Manufactuer's
  60. Trade Show to be held in Chicago, IL, the end of July. A computer
  61. BBS set up will be installed to "enlighten" other manufacturer's to the
  62. capabilites and  efficiency of the Information Highway and it's cost
  63. effectiveness in tranmitting information about their products via
  64. the CFDN.

  66. We established, on June 18th, our first official overseas FTP site
  67. in London, doc.oc.ac.uk (/recreation/crafts/cfdn-fido), and are
  68. currently negotiating permanent FTP sites in Japan, Germany and
  69. Austrialia.

  71. We have had an "offer" to establish a dedicated server for CFDN by a
  72. coporate interest, however, this aspect needs much looking into before
  73. any moves are made on it. While it is nice to be given the money for
  74. the equipment, I do not feel comfortable being "indebted" in this free
  75. endeavor.

  77. So that's a quick run down on what the CFDN was and has become.

  94. PS: Look for CFDN-ALL in the Fibernet Library. It is a partial listing
  95.     if Fido nodes and BBS numbers who carry ALL the CFDN files and
  96.     are free access.
